Just another Cell Phones weblog

The Register had a chat with Mats Lindoff at MWC, and the resulting conversation some good points made in it - you can read the full thing here, but below, for brevity, is the bulleted-version:

  • On why WinMo for the X1: SE need to have a broad portfolio
  • On X1 sales volumes: not expected to be a high seller; for the techie niche
  • On UIQ vs WinMo: UIQ is two of the newly announced handsets - G700 and G900
  • On SE's lack of CDMA: Ericsson is showing LTE at 25Mb/s (good answer!)
  • Big for next year: DLNA (built on UPnP) to make handset in to universal remotes
  • On innovation: C902 has R&D led tech inside it e.g. face recognition and tap-to-focus

Hydrogen Powered Phone

Angstrom Power and Motorola supposedly have hydrogen-powered phones that contain a Hydrogen fuel cell that extracts hydrogen from water and electrons from the hydrogen. I guess you could say it’s kind of a water-powered phone. Oh and if you were wondering about the battery life that’s unknown.

Fuel cell maker Angstrom Power and cell phone maker Motorola have teamed up to create a prototype mobile phone that runs on a hydrogen fuel cell. Hydrogen is produced–by cracking water molecules–with a desktop fueling station and then inserted into a metal hydride storage container on the phone, says Aron Levitz, manager of business development for Angstrom. When the hydrogen molecules pass through a membrane in the fuel cell, electrons are stripped away and get diverted to run the phone.

Yahoo! oneConnect looks like a very nice applicatin for aggregating a ton of your on-the-go needs, particularly if you are one for staying in contact, and messaging your best buds. There are a bunch of instant messenger services that are accessible through oneConnect, including Messgner, AIM, and Yahoo's own, but also some other interesting sites/services like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Last.fm.

However, it would appear that both Microsoft and Facebook perhaps are not so happy with the way that oneConnect is aggregating their content feeds (or the fact they are even doing it) - interesting, because we are seeing more and more of this cross-pollination of services in different apps/websites, and obviously everyone wants to own the aggregrating user interface! Anyhow, you can read more about oneConnect on Yahoo!'s site here.

At the Mobile World Congress, Kingston showed us a neat accessory for data porting between a mobile phone and a computer. The so called DataTraveler Micro Reader is an all-in-one USB Flash drive and reader that can store, transfer and read content on mobile memory cards.

With dimensions of just 64×19.8×10.4 mm, weight of 8.68 g, and with its own storage capacity of up to 4GB, the tiny device is just perfect to carry around. All popular formats are supported, including microSD, microSDHC, and Memory Stick Micro (M2).

Unfortunately, we don't know how much the DataTraveler Micro Reader will cost once it's released later in the month — we only know the 1GB version will be released first, followed by the 2GB and 4GB versions soon after…

I always thought the Sony Ericsson W910 is a special handset. As a matter of fact, I've called it the best non-smart musicphone for couple of times.

So I was not that surprised to learn that GSMA honored it with the Best Handset 2008 award. We're not sure whether judges like the shake control, auto-rotate feature, 3D Java games or HSDPA — or everything that combined — it's just the fact that the Swedish-Japanese handset maker has one of the best on-the-go entertainment devices in its portfolio. Yeah, we also suggest the W910 for those not looking to buy a smartphone, but an easy to use yet powerful music phone… Full release follows after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE - Sony Ericsson is delighted to announce that its W910 Walkman phone has been awarded Best Handset at the GSM Association's 13th Global Mobile Awards 2008.

Launched last year, the W910 Walkman phone is designed for entertainment; whether music, 3D games, video, or high-speed Web access. It's also geared to let consumers choose their music just the way they want it. Applications such as Shake control enable them to flick the phone to control games or skip and shuffle between music tracks while SenseMeTM lets them discover music to match their mood and tempo. With its 1GB Memory Stick Micro provided in box, the W910 Walkman phone can hold over 900 songs* with room for plenty more thanks to its expandable memory.

"We are very proud to receive such a prestigious award for what has proved to be a very popular product," says Dick Komiyama, Sony Ericsson President. "The W910 Walkman makes it quicker and easier to transfer or download music. It's also about thinking beyond music, to games, videos and the Web."

Since the launch of the W800 Walkman phone in August 2005, more than 57 million Walkman phones have been sold worldwide. The Walkman phone range has seen rapid expansion, most recently with the launch of the W980 Walkman phone at this year's Mobile World Congress. This latest Walkman phone promises to get the most out of consumers' music with superior clear audio sound, storage for 8,000 songs, and Walkman on Top experience that allows users to control all of their music from the outside of their phone.
