Opera Software announced that Opera Mobile 9.5 would be coming soon and would be shown at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona. I had a chance to visit the Opera Software booth and spoke with a product manager who ran through this latest mobile browser on a Sony Ericsson UIQ device. You can see some of the features of Opera Mobile 9.5 in action in the following video.
The HTC Advantage I have been using for several months comes with Opera Mobile 8.5 preloaded in the ROM and is actually the selected default browser on the device. Opera Mobile 8.5 makes the device much more useful for me since I find Internet Explorer Mobile to be a weak mobile browser. However, there are still a few websites I need to visit that Opera Mobile 8.5 doesn’t fully support and I am hoping that Opera Mobile 9.5 provides this needed functionality and from the press release and seeing it in action I think this just may be the browser I need.
Opera Mobile 9.5 has been improved with new zooming and panning capabilities, faster page loading, Flash Lite 3 support (up to OEMs and operators), and Opera Widget capable. Other features include tabbed browsing, landscape support, call phone number from a web page, send a link as a text message, and much more. The public beta should be available soon and I can’t wait to try it out.
The Register had a chat with Mats Lindoff at MWC, and the resulting conversation some good points made in it - you can read the full thing here, but below, for brevity, is the bulleted-version:
On why WinMo for the X1: SE need to have a broad portfolio
On X1 sales volumes: not expected to be a high seller; for the techie niche
On UIQ vs WinMo: UIQ is two of the newly announced handsets - G700 and G900
On SE's lack of CDMA: Ericsson is showing LTE at 25Mb/s (good answer!)
Big for next year: DLNA (built on UPnP) to make handset in to universal remotes
On innovation: C902 has R&D led tech inside it e.g. face recognition and tap-to-focus

I always thought the Sony Ericsson W910 is a special handset. As a matter of fact, I've called it the best non-smart musicphone for couple of times.
So I was not that surprised to learn that GSMA honored it with the Best Handset 2008 award. We're not sure whether judges like the shake control, auto-rotate feature, 3D Java games or HSDPA — or everything that combined — it's just the fact that the Swedish-Japanese handset maker has one of the best on-the-go entertainment devices in its portfolio. Yeah, we also suggest the W910 for those not looking to buy a smartphone, but an easy to use yet powerful music phone… Full release follows after the jump.
PRESS RELEASE - Sony Ericsson is delighted to announce that its W910 Walkman phone has been awarded Best Handset at the GSM Association's 13th Global Mobile Awards 2008.
Launched last year, the W910 Walkman phone is designed for entertainment; whether music, 3D games, video, or high-speed Web access. It's also geared to let consumers choose their music just the way they want it. Applications such as Shake control enable them to flick the phone to control games or skip and shuffle between music tracks while SenseMeTM lets them discover music to match their mood and tempo. With its 1GB Memory Stick Micro provided in box, the W910 Walkman phone can hold over 900 songs* with room for plenty more thanks to its expandable memory.
"We are very proud to receive such a prestigious award for what has proved to be a very popular product," says Dick Komiyama, Sony Ericsson President. "The W910 Walkman makes it quicker and easier to transfer or download music. It's also about thinking beyond music, to games, videos and the Web."
Since the launch of the W800 Walkman phone in August 2005, more than 57 million Walkman phones have been sold worldwide. The Walkman phone range has seen rapid expansion, most recently with the launch of the W980 Walkman phone at this year's Mobile World Congress. This latest Walkman phone promises to get the most out of consumers' music with superior clear audio sound, storage for 8,000 songs, and Walkman on Top experience that allows users to control all of their music from the outside of their phone.

Sony Ericsson was busy making announcements at Mobile World Congress yesterday and two new smartphones that were announced almost didn’t catch my attention because their model numbers are almost the same as a couple of Cybershot phones they announced.. The upcoming SE C700 and C900 Cybershot phones are actually full UIQ smartphones, but I initially had them confused with the two SE C702 and C902 Cybershot camera phones also announced yesterday. I found out from reading All About Symbian that these other two were actually UIQ devices.
The G700 has a 2.4 inch touch screen display, 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth radio, and Memory Stick Micro expansion card slot. The G900 has all the features found in the G700, with the addition of a 5 megapixel camera and WiFi.
The G700 will launch in Silk Bronze and the G900 will launch in Dark Red and Dark Brown. Both are UMTS 2100 and GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 phones that will be available in selected markets from Q2 2008.
