MWC08: Nokia adds Google search to Nokia Search on new handsets

On my Nokia N95 there is a search plug-in on the standby screen that provides a shortcut to search on my device or via the internet. Previously, you had a choice between Windows Live Search or Yahoo Search. This week Nokia announced that Google search will be implemented in the future as well. The four new devices (the N96, N78, 6210 Navigator, and 6220 Classic) will have it integrated and eventually everyone will be able to download an update to the Nokia Search application.
In addition to internet searches, Nokia Search acts like a desktop search tool in that you can search for files on your device or storage card. This is important as these devices ship with more memory and larger expansion cards and people collect more and more data that can be hard to find. Nokia Search also allows you to launch associated applications when you find the data you want and select it so it is a great integrated system.

The Nokia N78, in European and North American flavors

The latest phone comes form Nokia, the latest candybar to get the updated industrial design is the N78, a midrange handset (by Nseries standards, anyway) with an integrated FM transmitter setting it apart from the crowd. Another notable feature is its picture geotagging capability, made possible by the 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera paired with integrated AGPS. Other than that, it’s pretty much your average S60 Third Edition Feature Pack 2 piece with Bluetooth and WiFi, though it’s the very first Nseries model to be announced in both European and North American 3G versions simultaneously. Look for it to start stocking shelves next quarter for €350 (about $507).

Nokia has just announced that they are the official sponsor of the 50th Grammy Awards. An award show that is pretty much rich people patting other rich people on the back for albums that might sell rather well, but are mostly crap, I'm excited. But why Stefan? The Grammy's are watched by practically every single American, I would wager more people watch the Grammy's than the Superbowl or NBA Finals. I'm not guessing, I'm telling you this will be the event where Nokia begins their huge push to break doubly digit market share in the colonies.
Am I going to be watching it? Nope. Do I hope a celebrity face plants on the run way and gets talked about on every major news network the next day? Absolutely. What am I really hoping for? Britney Spears' sister gets a Nokia N95 and proceeds to send naughty pictures to her boyfriend who then sells them to the highest bidder so that they can be leaked onto the internet for everyone to see. A man can only dream right? It already happened to the girl from High School Musical.

The well-known research firm Canalys released their latest smart mobile device report breaking down results from the 4th quarter of 2007, as well as summary results from the entire year. As expected, Nokia remained the global market leader with 52.9% of the market share in the 4th quarter. RIM finished in second place with 11.4% and Apple came in a surprising third in the world with 6.5% share. HTC was not specifically identified, but their numbers can be found in the 22.7% Others vendor and I personally want to see their numbers split out because I believe they have a significant market share as well with the majority of the Windows Mobile market.
