Sony Ericsson was busy making announcements at Mobile World Congress yesterday and two new smartphones that were announced almost didn’t catch my attention because their model numbers are almost the same as a couple of Cybershot phones they announced.. The upcoming SE C700 and C900 Cybershot phones are actually full UIQ smartphones, but I initially had them confused with the two SE C702 and C902 Cybershot camera phones also announced yesterday. I found out from reading All About Symbian that these other two were actually UIQ devices.

The G700 has a 2.4 inch touch screen display, 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth radio, and Memory Stick Micro expansion card slot. The G900 has all the features found in the G700, with the addition of a 5 megapixel camera and WiFi.

The G700 will launch in Silk Bronze and the G900 will launch in Dark Red and Dark Brown. Both are UMTS 2100 and GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 phones that will be available in selected markets from Q2 2008.

Well, today is the day. Mobile World Congress will be kicking off in a few hours and I'm already up and at it. Actually, I'm still up - I couldn't sleep. Knowing that the world's latest and greatest handsets are just a few hours away, I'm jittery with anticipation.

Last night Sony Ericsson bowed their XPERIA X1 Windows Mobile-based superphone at their pre-MWC event. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 certainly doesn't disappoint in the "looks" department and we're hearing that HTC had a lot to do with that. In fact, HTC may have had everything to do with it. The once-ODM seems to have jumped back in the game and allegedly designed this sleek, QWERTY-toting handset for the Japanese/Swedish handset-team.

As far as "feel" is concerned, we'll just have to wait until we can get our sweaty hands on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 to make any conclusions. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 boasts a 3-inch touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, touch-sensitive trackball, and it's all powered by the familiar Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional OS. We would have loved to play with this superphone ourselves, but alas, only SE employees were so lucky. If this thing handles itself anywhere near as good as it looks, Sony Ericsson's got a real winner on their hands.

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) today announced the U380 mobile platform delivering a true mobile Internet experience and empowering consumers with advanced multimedia features. The U380 is an integrated and verified one-chip HSPA platform, supporting all major Open Operating Systems on the market and the first product based on the recently announced Open OS collaboration with Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE:TXN).

The continuous need for more powerful devices combined with the demand for mass market smartphones makes the U380 a groundbreaking platform for mobile device manufacturers addressing this rapidly growing segment. By integrating Ericsson’s HSPA modem with TI’s high performance OMAP3430 applications processor into a one-chip solution, the U380 is among the smallest and most powerful multimedia platforms on the market in this category.

With support for all major Open OSs, the U380 will provide mobile device manufacturers with a robust and flexible architecture for applications and services deployment, enabling easier delivery and management of services and content. This enables handset manufacturers and mobile operators to differentiate their products through rich, easy-to-use and customizable user interfaces. The extensive verification and IOT testing performed by Ericsson will also enable manufacturers to rapidly bring highly advanced mobile devices to the mass market while reducing risk and lowering development costs.

Robert Puskaric, head of Ericsson’s mobile platforms business, says: “This is truly a next generation platform for the rapidly growing Open OS market. The combination of powerful multimedia performance and Open OS capabilities in an extremely small package makes the U380 platform hard to match.”

Richard Kerslake, general manager for the TI-Ericsson business, TI’s Wireless Terminals Business Unit, says “The combination of Texas Instruments’ and Ericsson’s key competences has really paid off. TI’s OMAP3430 processing power, coupled with Ericsson’s HSPA access technology in a pre-verified and tested platform supporting all major open operating systems will provide great opportunities for device manufacturers worldwide.”

The U380 platform is expected to be commercially available in the first half of 2009.

Sony Ericsson has made some phone concepts: the full touchscreen X890i and the Cyber-shot concepts. The back of the X890i looks like it would give the iPhone some competition. Unfortunately these wont be releasing on the market.

Nokia may have fetish with naming their smartphones as “multimedia computers” or “enterprise terminals,” but Sony Ericsson has the thing with colors. Instead of calling them simply silver and black, they refer to them as “Warm Silver” and “Thunder Black.” Yeah, there are multiple shades of each color, but do they really think anyone will say “hey, you got that warm silver K530!”

Speaking of colors, the Swedish-Japanese handset maker has made its mid-range K530i candybar available in additional color - “Fiery Red.” And although they’ll initially launching the phone in Taiwan for the Chinese New Year (February 7th), it’s fair to argue we’ll see the newly colored device hitting the western hemisphere just in time for the Valentine’s Day. We’ll see…
