Sony Ericsson announced the release of its new Xperia X1 arc slider phone on February 10, 2008. The handset belongs to the company’s premium class of phones. The device promises to provide users with a unique cell phone convergence experience.

The Xperia beautifully converges mobile web communication technology with multimedia entertainment. It sports a 3 inches wide video graphics array (VGA) touch screen display that shows beautiful images with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.

The Xperia lets the users explore it various functions in a unique manner. The handset’s front panel features a touch sensitive full QWERTY keyboard and a 4-way navigation key with optical joystick. The device has well spaced keys that make it much convenient to type with it. The phone is equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) receiver that lets one locate her or his exact position in a city.

The Xperia is equipped with a 3.2 mega pixel camera with auto focus. The device operates on a Windows Mobile operating system. It comes with 400 MB of built in memory that can be expanded further by using a microSD memory card. It has support for GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA 850/1700/1900/2100 MHz and UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA 900/1700/1900/2100 MHz networks.

The phone is equipped with a Bluetooth stereo (A2DP), Media Player and FM radio. It sports an Internet Explorer Mobile web browser that gives continuous internet access to the users while they are on the move. The device features a predictive text input application and also has support for handwriting recognition.

Dee Dutta, Sony Ericsson’s Head of Marketing said that the launch of Xperia X1 places the company at the forefront of mobile convergence. The company’s Head of Portfolio & Propositions Rikko Sakaguchi said that their aim was to deliver a seamless blend of multimedia entertainment with mobile web technology within a unique design.

The Xperia X1 comes in a quality metal finish. The handset’s arc design provides it a solid feel. The device comes in black and silver colors. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 will be widely available in markets from the last quarter of 2008 onwards.
